Tipping a Golf Pro?

November 25, 2008
Peacefield asked:

I’ve never taken a golf lesson all my life. My club has presented me with a certificate for a free 30 minute lesson. My question is on ettiquette. Are you supposed to tip a golf pro at the end of a lesson?

Thanks.

lol no you dont tip him. the idea is that the free lesson you get will encourage you to keep taking lessons. and the future lessons will not be free. there in lies the key. the free lesson leads to more lessons.

No i wouldn’t beacuase if he is a head pro than he is probally doing very well for himself . But do yourself a favor and tip the people that service u at your club they really apprecate it and they will always take care of u . No tipping head Professionals !!

No. It’s akin to tipping your doctor. He’s a professional and tipping is not appropriate.

if you want to then yea you can

but traditionally nah your not suppose to

    and this is why

    1) It’s their job(i understand waiters/bus boys/girls get tips but read on why its different)

    2) because their employer pays them to give and teach lessons

and 3) Evey golf pro before he gets hired for a job always(and i mean always) have an arrangement when it comes to the lessons. they get paid hourly(most of the time salary though…)plus depending on how well your known make an agreement on the % of cash he gets from the lesson. some professional teachers get 20% of the 80 dollar lesson they teach and some get 75%

the golf pro here where i work probably gets around 60-100% just based of the fact that in like 2004 he was the NCPGA teacher of the year(northern california professional golfers association)

so if you want to be nice then ya go ahead and tip him but if its course etiquette….nope its not necessary

although in some ways if you wanted to tip him because the certificate was free and he wasnt making anything on that 30 minutes besides his salary then i suppose its right to tip him….then again if you become repeat business then tipping isnt necessary

so yes or no it all depends on you(i get my lessons free all the time since he was my college golf coach so i tip our course pro when i get lessons)
