Golf Tips For Left Handed Golfers

January 24, 2009

Almost all the instructions and tips for golfers found anywhere are specific to the right handed golfers. Learning golf may appear tougher if you are a left handed person. But there is not much of a difference between the techniques used by the left handed golfers when compared to the right handed golfers. It’s basically a mirror image. So in the tips and instructions what is right for the right handed golfer will be left for the left handed golfer and what’s left for the right handed golfers will be right for the left handed golfer. But there are few other issues that a left handed golfer should keep in mind.

Equipment

Good equipment is an integral part of the game for any golfer. A left handed golfer should keep in mind that he should not golf right handed because it’s not easy to find golf equipment for the left handed person. It’s better to wait to get the right equipment rather than to compromise on the way you play. A naturally left handed person can never achieve the perfection in golf by playing right handed. Though the choice may not be much one should try to find the best golf equipments for the left handed.

Technique

The basic technique for playing golf remains the same whether you are left handed or right handed. The grip should not be too tight or too loose. Just the right grip that feels comfortable would be perfect. The stance should ideally be square with the feet parallel to the target line. The shoulders, hips and thighs should be aligned parallel to the target. The swing path should be inside to square for a straight shot. Swingpath from inside to outside will result in a slice and from outside to inside will result in a hook.

For a chip shot stand close to the ball. Lean your body slightly to the right with hands ahead of the ball. Chipping is all about arm movement. Sweep the grass hitting through the ball. The right hand should dominate the shot. As soon as the impact is achieved the left knee leans in. This movement should be natural and slight. The hands are ahead of the ball even during the impact.

For a good putt shot one should have the eyes right over the ball. The arms should be relaxed wrists should be firm and the grip should be light. Shoulders square to the target and head down. The takeaway should be low and slow while the stroke should be accelerating. Putter blade should be vertical and square to the ball and the follow through long towards the target.

For the sand shot dig your feet well for firm footing. Club should be gripped lower to compensate the feet dug in the sand. Keeping the swing speed same the distance can be varied by the swing length.

Keeping all these tips in mind a left handed person can start out on the sport of golf. There is no reason why a left handed golfer cannot reach the pinnacle of success if he/she keeps in mind all the tips mentioned here.
